Solar Regulators
Solar regulators or charge regulators effectively convert the voltage and power input from a solar panel into a useable form for charging your motorhomes Leisure Batteries.
There are three main different technologies available for Solar Regulation. Basic regulators are generally switching devices which switch between 2 voltages in order to cover power loss from the battery. Generally 12.9V - 14V (battery voltage) which typically will not charge the battery entirely that efficiently however for most applications its fine but you are missing out on the panels potential maximum power output.
PWM regulators (Pulse Width Modulation) - a midrange performer in short. The PWM technology allows the solar cells to reach a higher voltage than a switching regulator and allowing greater efficiency.
MPPT Regulators (Maximum Power Point Tracking) allow the regulator to extract as much energy as possible from a PV array. Essentially the regulator will separate the solar panel and battery and treat them independently. The MPPT technology allows the regulator to track the peak power point during the day and extract the most from the suns energy.
