Optimizing Website Speed

Posted on by David Burley

website speed tweaks for oscommerceWell as Google uses website speed as a rating indicator nowadays I thought I would devote some time to tweaking today 😉

I thought our shop was fast loading, but with a few tweaks I have improved the speed by 25% !

A few tweaks to our .htaccess and browser cacheing has been forced, gzip compression was already enabled but I changed the configuration slightly and gained a slight performance improvement.

Finally cleared down a few of the database tables and removed 1000s of uneeded rows which also sped up access.

I also Googled and found some nice extra indexes to add to some of the database tables which should speed up lookups.

Hopefully all the combined work will help us maintain our high search engine ratings for our OsCommerce store 😉
